Duomo di Siracusa, officially Cattedrale metropolitana della Natività di Maria Santissima, stands on the eminence of the island of Ortygia and includes what was once the main sacred temple in the Doric style of the Syracuse polis, dedicated to Athena (Minerva) and converted to a church with the advent of Christianity.[youtube]h_xNbOzmqbs[/youtube]
Great destruction fell on the lot of the temple during the earthquake in Sicily in 1693. During the restoration, the temple was rebuilt in the fashion of the Sicilian Baroque.
