Monastery of st. Stefan, Meteora (UNESCO # 455)
Этот совет является частью дневников «Объекты Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО», «Истинное православие. Церкви, монастыри, храмы...»
In a region of almost inaccessible sandstone peaks, monks settled on these 'columns of the sky' from the 11th century onwards. Twenty-four of these monasteries were built, despite incredible difficulties, at the time of the great revival of the eremetic ideal in the 15th century. Their 16th-century frescoes mark a key stage in the development of post-Byzantine painting. (whc.unesco.org/en/list/455)
St. Stephen's Monastery is an Orthodox women's monastery, one of the six surviving Meteora monasteries. It was founded in the 14th century, but the rock itself became inhabited in the 12th century. The founder of the monastery is the monk Anthony. Around 1545, Patriarch Yeremey declared the monastery patriarchal and independent, a privilege that lasted for more than 200 years. At the end of the 18th century, a new cathedral was built, dedicated to St. Charalambius, who since the 17th century was considered the second (after St. Stephen) patron of the monastery.
Today, the Monastery of St. Stephen is the only one among meteors that has a modern access road and a stone bridge, located at the same height as the rock.
